DESCRIPTION:

Please join us for our annual elections, presentation of the Phil Sobel Award, and our educational program on risk assessment issues.

Child safety is of paramount concern for legal and mental health and legal professionals and domestic violence, and its impact on children, puts them in harm’s way. Triage and risk assessments can be effective in family law cases for developing parenting plans that provide the court and families with targeted interventions and support. Risk factors, such as substance abuse, mental illness, and child maltreatment, may be contributing issues and need to be considered in a risk evaluation.

UPON COMPLETION, ATTENDEES WILL BE ABLE TO:

  • Define and assess the various types of domestic violence and the importance of triage for both lawyers  and evaluators.
  • Identify the research on implicit bias against domestic violence victims in family court cases.
  • Identify the components of a Forensic Parenting Time Risk Assessment (FPTRA) when children are exposed and experiencing DV & identify potential parenting plans given the potential risk assessment outcomes.
  • Identify the components of a FPTRA when mental health, and/or substance abuse may be present in one or both parents & identify potential parenting plans given the potential risk assessment outcomes.
